 This test method is used to measure the surface texture depth of a road, which represents the average depth of voids below the high points of the pavement surface. Surface texture is a critical parameter for skid resistance, road safety, and pavement performance evaluation.

Traditionally referred to as the ‘sand patch’ method, the test originally used graded sands or glass beads (commonly applied in line marking). Modern testing methods continue to follow these principles while providing accurate and reliable results for both asphalt and concrete pavements.
